The DevSquad approach to software product discovery

Want to skip the guesswork and wasted money? We got you.

Without DevSquad

icon

Guess your way through discovery

Without a structured process, you're left piecing together interviews, research, and prototyping from scratch. The result is confusion, delays, and a product that misses the mark.

icon

Make risky assumptions about user needs

Most teams skip validation and jump straight into building. That leaves you guessing what users want, and ultimately wasting time and money on features no one asked for.

icon

Overbuild a bloated product

Typical firms rush into development with oversized scopes and unclear priorities. You end up with an expensive product packed with features no one uses.

icon

Launch with UX that pushes users away

Skipping early UX strategy leads to clunky interfaces and broken flows. When users get confused or frustrated, they leave, hurting adoption before you even get started.

With DevSquad

  • "It's very hard to do a design sprint effectively in house. You need a specialist and a different perspective. DevSquad is very strong in facilitating these discussions, and the Design Sprint is clearly one of their core capabilities."

Our process for software product discovery

Effective discovery begins with a plan. Every product discovery starts with understanding your vision and then transforming it into a successful product plan from the start.

Image

STEP 1

Product vision

We kick things off with a strategy session to align on your goals. Together, we explore your product vision, target users, and the problem you're solving. Moving forward, every decision is grounded in purpose and built around what matters most.

Image

STEP 2

Low fidelity prototyping

With the product vision in place, we create the information architecture and map out key user flows to bring structure to your product. You'll provide feedback throughout the process, and we'll present the full low-fidelity prototype in a presentation session to review direction and functionality.

Image

STEP 3

High fidelity prototyping

The next step is to turn your low-fidelity prototype into a fully designed interface, combining structure with your approved branding. Throughout this phase, we'll request feedback to fine-tune the experience. Then we walk you through the polished prototype in another presentation.

Image

STEP 4

Product backlog and plan

After high fidelity prototyping is complete, we translate your prototype into a detailed product backlog in Jira, complete with titles, descriptions, and priorities. Each task is labeled MVP or post-MVP. You'll also receive a timeline estimate for MVP delivery, all reviewed in a final presentation.

STEP 5

Hand off or partner

Once the discovery phase is complete, you choose how you want to move forward. Take your validated prototype and backlog to build in-house, or keep the momentum going with one of our Dedicated Development Squads, complete with developers, QA, DevOps, and a technical product manager.

Frequently asked questions about software product discovery

Why should I hire a software development company for the product discovery process?

Switcher

It's easy to develop tunnel vision when you're close to the product idea. Working with seasoned experts brings a fresh, unbiased perspective. At DevSquad, discovery is the foundation of everything we do. We're committed to helping you plan strategically and build the right product from day one.

Do I need to go through the discovery process if I know what software I want to build?

Switcher

Yes. Discovery and validation go hand in hand. You might confirm you're on the right path, or uncover that changes are needed. Skipping discovery risks costly missteps. Compared to building the wrong product, a short discovery sprint is a small investment that's well worth the cost.

How much does software product discovery services cost?

Switcher

Costs vary based on your goals and the complexity of your product. After an initial call, we'll provide clear pricing for your discovery sprint. In general, DevSquad charges a fixed monthly fee based on squad size, with no long-term contracts or commitments required.

How long does software product discovery take?

Switcher

Most product discoveries take 4 to 8 weeks. For complex products or teams with many stakeholders, the process may extend up to 12 weeks. When clarity is needed, it's smarter (and more cost-effective) to spend a bit more time in discovery than to rush into costly rework.

How often should I go through the product discovery process?

Switcher

Regular discovery sprints keep your roadmap aligned with real user needs and help you avoid building on assumptions. We recommend revisiting the discovery process every 3 to 4 months to validate new ideas, prioritize updates, and adapt your product to changing demands.
